I’ve always loved skincare. Always.
Even as a teenager, I’d linger in the drugstore aisles, eyeing face washes and moisturizers like they were treasure. Back then, I didn’t need much – just a Neutrogena bar soap and some baby oil before sun exposure (or maybe tanning oil 😬).
Now at 45? I feel like I need everything.
And does anyone else feel like there are exponentially more skincare products available now? Serums, creams, toners, mists… it’s overwhelming. So, let’s get honest: Do anti-aging products really work or are we just paying for hope in a bottle?
Do Anti-Aging Skincare Products Really Work?
I scroll through before-and-after photos like it’s my part-time job. But half the time, I can’t even tell the difference.
Some ads promise “visible improvement in 7 days.” Really? I can barely remember what my face looked like yesterday – let alone whether that sunspot is lighter or those fine lines are less obvious.
If you’ve tried an “instant results” product that actually worked, please tell me. I’m begging.
Let’s Talk Cellulite Creams (and Other Empty Promises)
I’ve also wandered into the world of skin-tightening and cellulite creams. My skin’s never going to look 25 again (and that’s totally fine – though I wish I’d appreciated that skin more when I had it).
Still, I keep trying.
So many creams with promises. So few results.
At this point, if a lotion smells good, feels nice, and doesn’t break me out – that’s a win. But if you’ve found one that actually smooths skin, I want to know.
Feeling Overwhelmed by Skincare After 40?
Just when I think I’ve nailed a routine, a morning show or influencer shares “15 Must-Try Products,” and suddenly I’m questioning everything.
Cleansers.
Scrubs.
Serums.
Creams.
Lotions.
Sunscreens.
Mists.
And don’t even get me started on the morning vs. nighttime vs. mid-day routines.
It’s too much. It’s glorious. I love it. I’m overwhelmed.
Sound familiar?
A Few Skincare Favorites I Actually Love (and Repurchase)
These aren’t sponsored (though I’d be thrilled if they were).

Daily SPF I’ll Actually Wear
Eucerin Tinted (or Untinted) Age Defense Face Sunscreen Lotion
Lightweight, non-greasy, and not “sunscreen-y.” I wear it every single day, even under our permanent winter grey sky.
Makeup Setting Spray
Milani Make It Last Setting Spray
I spritz it after makeup and keep one in my purse for reapplication on sunny days. Simple, affordable, and it works.
Longtime Love
Neutrogena Blemish Bar Soap
I’ve used this since I was 13. I try other things, but always come back. Yes, I still get acne and need “mature skin” products. Ugh, 45.
Nighttime Nourishment
Measurable Difference Rosehip Oil
Smells amazing and makes my skin feel nourished. I use it at night or whenever my face feels dry. Sometimes I mix it into lotion for an extra boost.
I also stick with CeraVe Moisturizing Cream during winter – it’s a lifesaver.
Quick PSA: Retinol Isn’t a Toy
I use a prescription retinol (Tretinoin). It’s fantastic for acne and fading dark spots, but please – follow the directions carefully.
I thought I could skip the “ease into it” phase and ended up red, peeling, and flaky. Learn from me. Start slow and use moisturizer like your life depends on it.
My Super Basic, Everyday Makeup Routine
I’ve been searching for a lightweight foundation that works for daily wear. Most are too heavy, streaky, or (worst of all) settle right into wrinkles.
Foundation
Pixi H2O Skin Tint – Weightless, smooth, and gives a natural finish. Not full coverage, but perfect for everyday life.
Blush
Glossier Cloud Paint – Light, blendable, and looks fresh all day.
Finishing Powder
e.l.f. Perfect Finish HD Powder – Helps cut shine, especially after layering serums and moisturizers.
Am I the only one who mixes brands like this? Or do most people stay loyal to one line?
