Unpopular opinion? Maybe.
But if I could tell my younger self one thing about fashion, it would be this:
Wear the short shorts. Rock the cute dresses. Show off that midsection. Be bold. Be confident.
Because in the blink of an eye, you’re in your 40s – standing in a store saying, “I used to wear cute stuff like that!”
My Daughter Has Sparkle. I Have…Beige.
I’ve never been a fashionista. Never knew what shoes go with what or how to “build a capsule wardrobe.”
But my daughter? She sparkles – literally. She loves color, bold patterns, rhinestone headbands, and glittery boots. People stop us all the time to compliment her outfits.
My mom’s the same way. She’s always had flashy style.
Meanwhile, no one’s ever said to me:
“Wow, I love your plain beige top!”
“Those one-tone sneakers? Stunning!”
I Don’t Know Where I Fit in the Fashion World
When I look back, fashion seemed easier.
The ’80s had neon, big bangs, and tight-rolled jeans.
The ’90s had flannel shirts, Doc Martens, and crop tops.
There was a start and an end to each trend.
Now? Everything is everything.
Skinny jeans, wide-leg, bootcut – they all exist at once. I’ve tried them all, but these stretchy high-waist jeans are fabulous for school drop-off and pretending to have it all together.
Front tuck, side tuck, full tuck, no tuck? Who knows anymore.
I Want to Be a Dress Person…But Am I?
I want to be one of those women who throws on a casual dress and looks effortlessly put together.
I even own a few casual dresses I swear I’ll wear similar to this dress that’s been hanging in my closet for months.
But the second I put one on, I feel like I’m pretending.
Why does it feel like I need permission to wear a dress grocery shopping?
Midlife Fashion Feels Like a Costume Party I Wasn’t Invited To
I watch those “Don’t wear it like this!” transformation videos—you know the ones. They add a belt, earrings, and a blazer, and suddenly it’s fashion magic.
I try it too. And I end up looking like I added a bracelet to a basic outfit and called it a day. Because… well… that’s exactly what I did.
I Love Cats. But Can I Still Wear Cat Shirts?
There are tons of adorable cat-themed tops out there.
On little girls? Adorable.
Teenagers? So cute.
Even elderly women? Absolutely charming.
But 40-something me in a cat shirt?
I have a few cat shirts that I want to wear, but I never know if I look quirky or like I’m trying too hard. (Still, tell me these cat shirts aren’t adorable.)
Is this a me thing – or is there a secret to pulling it off with confidence?
Maybe It’s Not About Fashion After All
Maybe the trick to midlife style isn’t about rules or trends.
Maybe it’s about showing up – sparkle, beige, cat shirts and all – feeling comfortable in your own skin again.
Confidence might just be the best accessory we’ve been overlooking.
